CBT for Burnout

At a glance

Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, examines relationships between thoughts, feelings and actions. It may be useful for an assessed problem such as anxiety or depression, but its use in a burnout plan should be linked to clear individual goals.

A person who repeatedly checks routine work because any mistake feels catastrophic might explore the prediction behind that checking and test a safe alternative. The therapist and client would consider the real standard required, not assume that every concern is irrational.

CBT should not be used to reframe understaffing or harassment as merely a perception problem. Those conditions need their own response.

Ask how sessions will work

Discuss the proposed focus, any between-session practice, the expected review point and how the approach can be adapted if you are very fatigued. A manageable exercise is more useful than homework that becomes another overwhelming task.

Judge the plan by its purpose

Evidence for CBT in a diagnosed condition does not mean that one standard CBT package cures every form of occupational strain. Ask what improvement would look like and what happens if it is not occurring. Therapy for burnout concerns places CBT in context, and perfectionism offers an example of a pattern that may be worth discussing with a qualified therapist.
