At a glance
Do not wait for a burnout assessment if there is immediate danger, an inability to stay safe or a sudden serious physical symptom. Burnout is not an explanation that rules out a medical or mental health emergency.
Seek emergency help now when needed
Examples include severe chest pain, major breathing difficulty, stroke-like weakness or speech change, collapse, or a sudden extremely painful headache. Thoughts of harming yourself with an immediate risk of acting also require urgent support. Contact the emergency service for your location; if possible, ask someone you trust to stay with you while help is arranged.
This is not an exhaustive list. If you think the situation may be an emergency, seek urgent medical advice rather than using a website to decide.
Act promptly on unsafe functioning
If exhaustion or confusion makes driving, operating equipment or caring for others unsafe, stop the hazardous activity and obtain help. Arrange an alternative way home or a safe handover. Tell the appropriate person about the functional risk without waiting to settle on a diagnosis.
For persistent difficulties without immediate danger
Book a clinical appointment and bring concrete examples of what has changed. When to see a doctor and appointment preparation can help. If you are in the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers call or text support; elsewhere use the crisis service available locally. Emergency services remain the appropriate route for immediate life-threatening danger.
