At a glance

Burnout severity is best discussed through functional impact, distress and safety rather than an unverified online stage system. Someone who is still working may nevertheless be struggling significantly.

Describe what is becoming harder

Look at work tasks, daily self-care, sleep, relationships and the ability to recover between demands. Concrete examples are more useful than a label such as “stage four.” Note whether support from others is now needed for activities you previously managed.

Safety changes the response. Reduced concentration in a role involving patients, vehicles or machinery may require immediate duty changes even before a complete assessment is available.

Use a simple impact record

  • Activities you can still manage reliably.
  • Activities you can manage only with extra time or help.
  • Activities you cannot currently manage safely.
  • Symptoms or situations that are worsening.

This is a discussion aid, not a validated severity scale. Bring it to an assessment and use it when considering temporary responsibilities.

Review the level of support

Support may range from work changes and outpatient care to more intensive clinical help, depending on the person's needs. A high symptom score alone does not show that residential treatment is necessary. Ask what the proposed setting provides and why it fits. Seek urgent care for immediate danger or inability to stay safe rather than trying to grade the burnout first.
