Burnout Symptoms
Understand the pattern without self-diagnosing
Exhaustion, detachment and reduced efficacy can occur alongside poor sleep, concentration problems or physical complaints. No single symptom establishes burnout.
Use the symptom overview to organise your observations. Read urgent red flags if safety or a sudden serious symptom is a concern. Persistent difficulties deserve professional assessment.
Symptom guides
Burnout and Brain Fog
“Brain fog” is an informal term for problems with concentration, memory or clear thinking. It can occur during stressful or exhausting periods, but it has many possible explanations and is not a burnout diagnosis.
Symptoms & BodyBurnout and Decision Fatigue
Decision fatigue is a common description of feeling worn down by repeated choices. It is not a clinical diagnosis or proof of burnout, and the idea of a fixed daily supply of decision-making power should not be treated as a settled medical fact.
Symptoms & BodyBurnout and Digestive Symptoms
Digestive symptoms may change during stressful periods, but abdominal pain, bowel changes or nausea should not automatically be labelled burnout. The pattern and associated symptoms determine what assessment is needed.
Symptoms & BodyBurnout and Headaches
Headaches can occur during stressful periods, but a headache is not evidence of burnout. Track the headache itself and seek medical advice when the pattern is new, worsening or concerning.
Symptoms & BodyBurnout and Irritability
Irritability during a period of exhaustion can show up as a shorter temper, sensitivity to interruptions or feeling overwhelmed by small requests. It is a signal to examine demands and health, not a reliable test for burnout.
Symptoms & BodyBurnout and Loss of Motivation
Loss of motivation at work can reflect exhaustion, unclear goals, values conflict or a health problem. It is more useful to identify what has become difficult than to assume that effort or attitude is the only issue.
Symptoms & BodyBurnout and Sleep Problems
Work pressure and sleep problems can reinforce each other: it is harder to recover when sleep is disrupted, and poor sleep can make work feel more difficult. The first question is whether there is enough opportunity to sleep or difficulty sleeping despite that opportunity.
Symptoms & BodyBurnout Symptoms
Burnout concerns a pattern of work-related exhaustion, detachment and reduced efficacy. People may also report poor sleep, irritability or difficulty concentrating, but no symptom checklist can establish the cause by itself.
Symptoms & BodyCynicism and Detachment at Work
Cynicism and detachment in burnout refer to a growing distance from the job. They may appear as withdrawal, irritability or a sense that work no longer matters, but they should not automatically be treated as a character or conduct problem.
Symptoms & BodyEmotional Exhaustion
Emotional exhaustion can feel like having little capacity left to respond to ordinary demands. In occupational burnout, it is considered alongside the person's relationship to work and sense of effectiveness.
Symptoms & BodyPhysical Symptoms of Burnout
Physical difficulties such as fatigue, muscle tension, headaches or digestive changes may accompany a stressful working period. They are not specific to burnout, and a work-related explanation should not replace medical assessment when needed.
Symptoms & BodyReduced Professional Efficacy
Reduced professional efficacy means a diminished sense of being capable or effective at work. It may reflect a burnout pattern, but it does not automatically mean that a person's actual skills have disappeared.
