At a glance
Founder burnout can be difficult to address when personal identity, financial risk and business survival feel inseparable. Recovery planning needs both health support and a practical way for the business to function during reduced availability.
Identify the true single points of failure
Write down essential decisions, access permissions, customer obligations and tasks that only you currently perform. Some may genuinely require your involvement; others may reflect undocumented processes or a reluctance to delegate. Prioritise continuity for the most consequential tasks first.
Do not make major financial or ownership decisions solely from a burnout checklist. Obtain appropriate professional advice when the stakes are substantial.
Create a limited operating plan
For example, delegate routine approvals, define one contact for urgent matters and set scheduled review times. Decide which projects pause. A co-founder, board member or trusted adviser may help clarify business priorities, while an independent clinician addresses health needs.
Review identity and boundaries
Ask what rest means when every quiet moment turns into business planning. Boundary planning can make availability concrete, and perfectionism may help when delegation repeatedly fails. If symptoms extend beyond work, seek a broader assessment. Business commitment and taking care of health are compatible; the plan should make that compatibility practical.
