Burnout Self-Assessment: Limits and Uses

At a glance
A burnout self-assessment can help you reflect on patterns and prepare for a conversation. It cannot confirm burnout, diagnose depression or determine whether you are safe to continue a demanding role.
Questions to reflect on
- How has your energy during and after work changed?
- Are you becoming more distant from the job or the people you work with?
- Do you feel less capable, and what concrete examples support that feeling?
- Which demands or resources changed before this pattern developed?
- Is the difficulty affecting life outside work?
Write a few examples rather than trying to achieve a particular score. This page does not provide a validated diagnostic test or reproduce a licensed questionnaire.
If you use a published questionnaire
Check its intended population, timeframe, permissions and scoring instructions. Different tools measure different constructs, so scores are not interchangeable. A result should not be used by an employer to decide that an individual is resilient, unfit or responsible for a team problem.
For group surveys, see workplace burnout surveys and confidentiality safeguards.
Decide on action from impact
Seek assessment when symptoms persist, worsen or disrupt normal functioning, even if a score seems low. If you are struggling with safety-critical duties, ask for help promptly. A high score is a reason to discuss the situation, not a personal failure or a prescription for residential care. Use appointment preparation to turn your observations into a useful next step.

Burnout Differential Diagnosis
Differential assessment means considering other explanations for symptoms before settling on a conclusion. For burnout concerns, this may include sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, physical illness, medication effects and pressures outside work.
AssessmentBurnout Red Flags
Do not wait for a burnout assessment if there is immediate danger, an inability to stay safe or a sudden serious physical symptom. Burnout is not an explanation that rules out a medical or mental health emergency.
AssessmentBurnout Severity and Functional Impairment
Burnout severity is best discussed through functional impact, distress and safety rather than an unverified online stage system. Someone who is still working may nevertheless be struggling significantly.
